May 5, 2009Air Berlin, Germany’s second-largest airline company, was able to increase its revenue per available seat kilometre for April 2009, with revenue rising by 13 percent to 5.86 Eurocents (04/2008: 5.19 Eurocents). In comparison with the corresponding month of the previous year, the number of passengers transported decreased from 2,242,575 to 2,166,034 (-3.4 percent). Fleet capacity utilization narrowed to 76.4 percent (-2.4 percentage points), while capacity was reduced by 0.4 percent. For the period from January to April 2009, Air Berlin welcomed a total of 7,636,014 passengers on board, i.e. 5.4 percent less than in the corresponding period of the previous year (2008: 8,073,735 passengers). This decline is in part due to the accumulated capacity decreasing by three percent. For the first four months of 2009, fleet capacity utilization decreased by 1.9 percentage points to 72.8 percent.
